Dan Mahler

Born in Tel-Aviv;  my original profession was and still is Plastic Surgery, while  parallelly, especially nowadays, also an artist.  Some day in my past I sold  my human re-shaping scalpels in favor of stone-chisels, to mold in natural materials, especially stone. My line is a rather expressionistic-emotional trend, where  in every stone I discover the human being, his emotions and worries, whom isolate from the surrounding waste, clean and polish to love, cares and talk to from morning  to evening. In July 2011 I got an international award  for my sculptures in the Cannes exhibition

 עלמת-חן – אוניקס 

האבן היא אוניקס, מורכבת מקווארץ, וצבעיה נובעים ממינרלים שונים שנטבעו בה. עלמת החן מדגימה גוונים בהירים וחומים הומוגניים-כמעט בצדה הקדמי, העוד שובל גלימתה או שיער ראשה הגולש מורכב ממעין ביעבוע חום, שמקורו, קרוב לוודאי, בתקופת היווצרותה של האבן לפני מיליוני שנים, מתוך יורה רותחת אי-שם בשבר הסורי-אפריקני באזור הכינרת. העלמה ניצבת על בסיס עשוי אלבסטר מצרי ירוק. גובה הפסל 50 ס"מ, בסיסו 23X23 ס"מ.

Pretty Lass – Onyx 

Onyx is a banded form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white. The sculpture Pretty Lass contains light and brownish colors on its front, and buble-like yellow and brown layer at its back. Its basis is a green Egyptian Alabaster. The height  is 50 cm, the basis 23X23 cm.

 עצבות – אלבסטר מצרי ירוק

האבן היא אלבסטר מצרי ירוק. אלבסטר או בהט הוא כינוי שניתן לשני סוגים שונים של מינרלים בעלי גבישים מפותחים: גבס, מינרל המורכב מסידן גופרית וקלציט – מינרל קרבונטי הבנוי מסידן וקרבונט.

הפסל הוא אחד מארבעה פסלים שלי שזכו בפרס יוקרתי בתערוכה בינלאומית שנערכה בקאן, צרפת, ביולי 2011 – ראה גם הפסל "טורסו" בתצוגה זו. גובה הפסל 44 ס"מ, בסיסו 25X23 ס"מ.

Agony –  Green Egyptian Alabaster.                              

 Agony  is one of my 4 sculptures  who won the Jury's prize in the Cannes International Exhibition, July 2011, together with Torso (see later).

Alabaster is a name applied to varieties of two distinct minerals –  gypsum (a hydrous sulfate of calcium) and calcite (a carbonate of calcium). The former is the alabaster of the present day; generally, the latter is the alabaster of the ancients. This name may derive further from the Ancient Egyptian word a-labaste, which refers to vessels of the Egyptian goddess Bast. The difference is that true alabaster is a variety of gypsum known as calcium sulphate, while "Oriental Alabaster" is a calcium carbonate.

The sculpture's height is 44 cm, its basis 25X23 cm

  שרעפים – אבן חול מצפון סיני

אבן-חול מורכבת משקעים של קווארץ עם מתכות שונות, המקנות לכל אבן-חול את הגוון הייחודי לה. בפסל זה אבן החול מכילה כמות גדולה של ברזל, ומכאן הגוון הכהה של הפסל. אבני-חול מצויות לרוב במדבריות, כמו בסהרה, במדבר ערב ובמדבריות הנגב וסיני. הדמות באה לידי ביטוי ברמזים מועטים של הרכנת הראש ועמידה מכונסת של אדם השקוע בשרעפיו, הוגה, או חלילה עצוב. גובה הפסל 42 ס"מ, בסיסו 20X19 ס"מ.

Meditating – Sand-Stone from northern Sinai (sometimes known as arenite) is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any colour, but the most common colours are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, pink, white and black. It is usually formed in deserts or dry places like the Sahara Desert in Africa, the Arabian desert in the Middle East, Israel and Sinai, and the Australian desert. In the western United States and in central Australia, most sandstone is red. The reclined figure is presents by minimal details in a so-called meditating status. The sculpture's height is 42 cm, its base is 20X19 cm.

 

 טורסו (גו) – אבן ירושלמית, מגילה

עיקרה של האבן הוא גיר סידני צהבהב, בתוכו שקעו תחמוצות ברזל, היוצרות באבן צורות אדומות שונות.  הפסל הוא אחד מארבעה פסלים שלי שזכו בפרס יוקרתי בתערוכה בינלאומית שנערכה בקאן, צרפת, ביולי 2011. מבנה האבן מעורר תחושה של לכאורה עץ בעל גוון אדום, אבל האלמנטים הבהירים בקדמת הגו, התואמים שדיים ובטן, מבהירים שלא בעץ מדובר. גובה הפסל 56 ס"מ, בסיסו 28X26 ס"מ.

Torso – Calcium Rock from southern Jerusalem area

                Torso won the Jury's prize in the Cannes International Exhibition, July 2011, together with Agony (see earlier). The raw pale-color rock contains aggregates of red colors. For a moment the stone presents a deceiving illusion of a potential tree. The sculpture's height is 56 cm, its base 28X26 cm

  חיבוק – אבן חתרורים מהרי יהודה

חתרורים היא אבן המורכבת מינרלים שונים רבים, בהם סיליקט, סידן, גיר ביטומני ומינרלים המרכיבים  גם את המלט. השם ניתן לאבן על שם בקעת חתרורים -  האזור בישראל בו היא מצויה, אם כי היא נמצאת גם בירדן.  קשה לדעת מי משתי הדמויות שיצאו מתוך האבן נהנית יותר – הגבר המלטף את שדה השמאלי של האישה, או האישה, הנמצאת במעין התפרקות רגשית. גובהו של הפסל 35 ס"מ, בסיסו 25X25 ס"מ.

Snuggling – Hatrurim metamorphic rock, age 3 million years.

The Hatrurim Formation is largely composed of an unusual rock type, a type of natural Portland cement formed by high-temperature alteration of late Cretaceous to lower Eocene bituminous chalk. The Hatrurim Formation was named for the locality Hatrurim, its largest area of exposure, but it also outcrops in several other parts of Israel and Palestine and Jordan. It seems impossible to decide who of the two figures emerging from the raw stone enjoys more – is this the male, holding his girl's left breast, or is it the girl, reaching some orgasm peek.  The sculpture's height is 35 cm, its basis 25X25 cm

 

  אהבת שתי האבנים – אבן-חול מדרום הנגב.

זוהי אבן חול מלוכדת גיר, והפסים הכהים הם תחמוצות ברזל ששקעו בה. המגע שבין שתי האבנים מרמז על-כך, שגם לאבנים גולמיות, לכאורה עצמים דוממים, יכולות להיות רגשות, לפחות ביעינו של המתבונן. גובה הפסל 33 ס"מ, בסיסו 44X33 ס"מ.

The love of the two stones – Israeli Sand-Stone

This sand-stone is composed of chalk mixed with iron oxides, which gives the dark color lines. The close touch between the two raw stones leads to the illusional feeling, that not only living beings, but also lifeless stones might have feelings. The sculptur's height is 33 cm, the basis 44X33 cm.

 

   זרימה – אבן ברדיליו, איטליה

ברדיליו הוא אזור בצפון איטליה בו קיימים מרבצים של אבן בעלת גוונים אפורים ולבנים. הפסל הוא זוג מתעלס, כשהשניים שלובים זה עם זה לעתים עד לבלי הכר היכן הוא והיכן היא. גובה הפסל 27 ס"מ, בסיסו 40X31 ס"מ.

Flowing – Bardiglio

Bardiglio is a sort of Italian marble forms, when limestone is compressed and heated by the natural rock-forming processes so that the grains re crystallize. As the marble forms the calcite crystals lock together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. These crystals give marble its natural luster. The marble veins are formed by inclusions of other non-calcite minerals. Bardiglio marble is quarried in Italy. The Grey color and beautiful grain of the stone is highly prized in architecture and art.                             

  The sculpture "Flowing" presents a loving couple, one in the arms of his mate, almost united to be one figure. Its height is 27 cm, the basis 40X31 cm.

 

  קשת בענן – אבן חול מהודו

אבני חול מהודו מתאפיינים בשלל צבעים רכים דמויי פסטל, לעתים שולט בהם הצבע הצהוב, לעתים החום בהיר. הודות לצבעים אלו ניתן לאבן שמה "קשת בענן", וזה גם שמו של הפסל. הדמות נחשפה מתוך האבן תוך התחשבות בטקסטורה הצבעונית היפהפייה של האבן הגולמית, מבלי לפגוע במבנה הרב-גוני של צבעיה הייחודיים. גובה פסל 36 ס"מ, בסיסו 29X10 ס"מ.

Rainbow – Indian Sand-Stone

Rainbow sandstone is sedimentary, but unlike limestone which is shell and bones, sandstone is most famous for its characteristic. Sandstone can also contain some of the materials found in granite, which makes some sand stone iridescent and/ or hard. Its rich variable and soft colors resemble rainbow. The figure was exposed out from the raw stone preserving its natural texture, unharming its polychromic beauty. Its height is 36 cm, the basis 29X10 cm.

 

  אפולו – אוניקס

האבן היא אוניקס, מורכבת קווארץ וגיר, וצבעיה נובעים ממינרלים שונים שנטבעו בה. ייחודי לאבן זו הן צורות בועיות של צבעי חום וצהוב, קרוב לוודאי תוצאה של בעבוע החומר בשלב קדום בו היה נוזלי או נוזלי למחצה. אפולו נראה כאן בגו בלבד, אבל העדר שאר חלקי גופו אינו מפחית מעוצמת ביטויו הגברי. גובה הפסל 77 ס"מ, בסיסו 28X27 ס"מ.

Apollo – Onyx

Onyx is a banded form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white. In this sculpture  the onyx presents a rich variety of textures, one of them, mainly at the front (Apollo's chest)  has a bubble-like formation,  perhaps the result of some bubbling process million years ago of a liquid or a semi-liquid magmatic materials. In spite of the fact that Apollo is presented here as a torso alone, its masculine features are well expressed. Its height is 77 cm, the basis is 28X27 cm.

 

 בת הכפר – אלבסטר מצרי ירוק

האבן היא אלבסטר מצרי ירוק. אלבסטר או בהט הוא כינוי שניתן לשני סוגים שונים של מינרלים בעלי גבישים מפותחים: גבס, מינרל המורכב מסידן גופרית וקלציט – מינרל קרבונטי הבנוי מסידן וקרבונט. בתוך הצבע הירוק-העמוק     (sap -green)  ניכרים ערוצים בצבע וורוד-אדמדם, המשָווים לפנים שבאבן ביטוי אנושי-נשי. גובה הפסל 42 ס"מ, בסיסו 23X32 ס"מ.

Farm Girl – green Egyptian Alabaster

The difference is that true alabaster is a variety of gypsum known as calcium sulphate, while "Oriental Alabaster" is a calcium carbonate. In this Alabaster stone the ruling tap- green color is enriched by pinky strands. The girl in this stone has simple and naïve  face, as if accepting life without any special expectations. The height of the sculpture is 42 cm, its base 32X23 cm.

 

 רות ונעמי – אלבסטר מצרי לבן

האבן היא אלבסטר או בהט הוא כינוי שניתן לשני סוגים שונים של מינרלים בעלי גבישים מפותחים: גבס, מינרל המורכב מסידן גופרית וקלציט – מינרל קרבונטי הבנוי מסידן וקרבונט. שתי דמויות מעורפלות למדיי ניבטות מתוך האבן – רות ונעמי. הדמות הגבוהה מהשתיים היא רות, שגובהה מבטא את גדולת נפשה ואת הזדהותה המלאה עם נעמי חמותה, העטויה בצעיף של קווארץ חום, ואומרת לה "אל תפגעי בי לעוזבך לשוב מאחוריך. כי אל אשר תלכי אלך, ובאשר תליני אלין, עמך עמי ואלהיך אלוהי. באשר תמותי אמות ושם אקבר…" (מגילת רות, פרק א). ובהמשך האגדה התנ"כית בן-נכדה של רות הוא דוד המלך – "ויקח בועז את רות ותהי לו לאישה… ותלד בן… ותקראנה שנו עובד, הוא אבי-ישי אבי דוד" (רות פרק ד). גובה הפסל  50 ס"מ, בסיסו 30X30 ס"מ.

 

Ruth and Naomi – white Egyptian Alabaster

The difference is that true alabaster is a variety of gypsum known as calcium sulphate, while "Oriental Alabaster" is a calcium carbonate. In this Alabaster stone the ruling tap- green color is enriched by pinky strands. This specific stone represent two famous biblical figures – Ruth and Naomi. During the time of the Judges when there was a famine, an Israelite family from Bethlehem—Elimelech, his wife Naomi, and their sons Mahlon and Chachlon emigrate to the nearby country of Moab. Elimelech dies, and the sons marry two Moabite women: Mahlon marries Ruth and Chachlon marries Orpah. The two sons of Naomi then die themselves. Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem. She tells her daughters-in-law to return to their own mothers, and remarry. Orpah reluctantly leaves; however, Ruth says, "Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me." (Ruth 1:16–17 NKJV). Later in this biblical legend, king David was  born as the son of  Ruth's grandson. The sculpture's height is 50 cm, its basis 30X30 cm.
